RECOMMENDATION #137 - DYLAN GOLDEN AYCOCK | SCOTT HIRSCH

DYLAN GOLDEN AYCOCK - CHURCH OF LEVEL TRACK
SCOTT HIRSCH - BLUE RIDER SONGS
scissor tail 2016, editions of 500

the hits just keep comin from OKLAHOMA's very own SCISSOR TAIL EDITIONS - two new slabs of wax due mid september and mid august respectively

CHURCH OF LEVEL TRACK is a top shelf folk guitar gem, six, twelve and electric, reinforced with violin, pedal steel, upright bass and percussion, and even some glorious synth touches, all executed with a "less is more" approach which is the most important axiom of this style for my money - doin too much will cost you regardless of style but folk guitar in particular - of course AYCOCK passes with flying colors - this is up there with the best i've heard from this new wave of american primitive, stuff like MARISA ANDERSON's THE GOLDEN HOUR, DANIEL BACHMAN's RIVER and CHUCK JOHNSON's BLOOD MOON BOULDER, those records will need to move over and make room for CHURCH OF LEVEL TRACK

BLUE RIDER SONGS finds bassist and producer for HISS GOLDEN MESSENGER striking out on his own under the vast umbrella of "alt country" - cordial hooks and a soulful vibe rooted in a cool 70s style channeling J.J. CALE, MICHAEL CHAPMAN and ROB GALBRAITH as well as DYLAN and WAYLON, borrowing understated pop sounds from solo BEATLES discographies, finding comparison to phenom STURGILL SIMPSON and criminally underappreciated singer-songwriter JAMES TOTH aka WOODEN WAND, fantastic cover art to boot (both albums here, actually) - SCISSOR TAIL might have just locked up my #1 "indie / singer-songwriter" album of the year again, just like last year with NADIA REID's LISTEN TO FORMATION
